    Satellite Tracking of People LLC (STOP) has a unique opportunity for a full-time Manager of Software Support Engineering who will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of STOP’s application environments and platforms, most specifically production.  This direct hire position is in our Houston, TX offices and will report directly to the Vice President of Software Systems.

     

    Job Purpose:

     

    Responsible for ensuring the application environments are optimally configured and tuned, that any changes that are to be deployed are minimally invasive, that customer’s expectations and SLAs are met for up time, and that overall system health is monitored and maintained.  This includes the ability to work with software development and quality engineering (QE) organizations to properly vet changes before they are promoted to production to evaluate any risks associated with their promotion.

     

    Managerially, the position will lead a team which maintains application systems, code deployments, scheduling crons, and works with our development operations (DevOps) team to coordinate and provide input to the development of custom Perl scripts and other automated code and system deployments.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties:

    • Pro-actively monitor production systems and when necessary be able to quickly react to system issues and/or outages when they occur
    • Be actively involved and understand any changes that are scheduled to be introduced to production by reviewing and approving in non-production prior to our change control windows
    • Coordinate and lead off-hours change control windows for production updates – this position will in some sense “own” our production environment and its platform
    • Provide a direct liaison between STOP’s Software Systems organization and Corporate IT Network, Infrastructure, Linux and Storage organizations as well as DBA group
    • Coordinate STOP compliance efforts for our new production environment that supports our FedRAMP accreditation and assist with ongoing maintenance of that accreditation
    • Investigate and identify patterns and anomalies in system behavior especially as they pertain to production performance and stability
    • In coordination with our DevOps team, manage and oversee RPMs builds, code and scripts for installs of our back-end Linux (CentOS) systems, deployments of our MS Windows based flagship website VeriTracks as well as database upgrades as they pertain to the application
    • Understand overall system architecture such that upcoming changes can be effectively communicated to members of the STOP Software Support Engineering organization as well as the aforementioned IT Corporate staff ensuring that the supporting change controls are effectively planned and implemented and that potential cross-organizational technical issues are identified and appropriately addressed
    • Coordinate 24x7 support efforts for escalation of system issues from Corporate NOC to include active participation in our on-call rotation

    Qualifications

    First and foremost we need an individual who is passionate about leading and whose primary mission is to manage the performance and stability of our production application infrastructure.  To accomplish this goal the candidate will need to have the requisite engineering background and experience that allows them to gain insight into how system is architected and operates.  This background will also allow them to quickly triage, diagnose and resolve issues thereby minimizing impact to the customer.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Able to understand and articulate the impact of IT infrastructure technologies (e.g., core switching, DNS, load balancers) on the applications that they manage
    • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Exceptional analytical and problem resolution skills
    • Self-starter who can learn systems quickly, ask questions when required, and can escalate issues as well as providing corresponding solutions when appropriate

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelors of Science in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline and/or equivalent job experience
    • 7 years hands-on operations experience with large, transaction heavy systems with 24x7x365 operation and associated uptime/stability requirements
    • 5 years hands-on experience with and deep understanding of SQL
    • 5 years team lead and managerial experience in an operational capacity
    • 3 years hands-on experience with visual database access tools (Toad for Oracle preferred)

     

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Relevant prior job experience overseeing multi-terabyte OLTP Oracle Enterprise instances with geo-graphic disparate locations and corresponding replication technologies to keep these instances in sync with near real-time latencies
    • Scripting experience facilitating the automation of system operations (e.g., automated package/RPM installs of server side software)

     

    Physical Requirements:

    Standing, sitting, walking, speaking, listening, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and manipulating tools, typing, using peripheral computer tools.  May be required to lift up to 25 pounds.
